Juvenile Detention Center
Located in Huntsville, Alabama, the Neaves-Davis Center for Children consists of an Intake Department, Probation Department and a secure Juvenile Detention Center. The Juvenile Detention Center houses youth pending court or awaiting transfer to post-adjudicated facilities with the Alabama Department of Youth Services. Additionally, some youth are court ordered to complete The Changing Directions program.
The Neaves-Davis Center for Children is a single floor 48 bed juvenile detention facility operated by Madison County in accordance with licensing standards set forth by the Alabama Department of Youth Services. The NDCC serves as a secure detention facility for delinquent juveniles detained by court order pending court hearings or acceptance in to rehabilitative treatment programs. The Neaves-Davis Center for Children is audited annually by the Alabama Department of Youth Services, the Madison County Department of Health and the Huntsville Fire Department with regard to health and safety issues. The NDCC is also compliant with Federal government standards such as the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). The Juvenile Detention Center features private sleeping rooms, multi-purpose activity rooms, a gymnasium, visitation, counseling areas, facilities for medical, and social services. In addition, the Juvenile Detention Center has a separate intake section. Advanced monitoring systems including digital video recordings and architectural design provide security and safety without bars. During their stay, youth undergo physical assessments and crisis intervention.
Physical Education Teachers provide physical education activity. Highly trained staff work to promote feelings of self-worth, to establish trust and teach youth to relate to others through structured unit activities. Each youth can express their own religious preference and maintain regular contact with family members through visits, written correspondence and phone calls. The detention center adheres to the guidelines of the National School Lunch Program, and three well-balanced meals are provided to each resident daily. The Huntsville City School System provides the Juvenile Detention Center educational services that focus on areas in which students are deficient such as remedial reading, language and math skills.
